The word comes from the Anishinaabe language family (including Ojibwe, Potawatomi, and Odawa), Indigenous to the Great Lakes region of North America.
Puhpowee refers to: the force that causes mushrooms to push up from the earth or more poetically: the invisible energy that brings life into appearance. It is not only about a mushroom, but about the moment of becoming. The emergence of something that was already there in the field of potential, yet still hidden.
For example: The earth breaths us out when we are born and breaths us back in again.
The term gained wider recognition through Robin Wall Kimmerer, a biologist and member of the Citizen Potawatomi Nation, in her book Braiding Sweetgrass. She uses puhpowee as an example of how Indigenous languages name processes that often remain invisible in English.
Where Western language says, “a mushroom grows,” puhpowee suggests: there is a mysterious movement from within to without.
In a small group of 2–4 people, you spend a day with me at Garden Club in Bergen.
You cultivate your mind, body, spirit, and the gardens. With Yang and Yin Yoga, ritual, art, bees, drawing, writing, cacao, fermenting food, and more.
No phones, no social media, no striving, no clock time.
Just you in nature—walking and dancing barefoot, with your hands in the soil. Planting seeds.
Taking a day to be in nature, to nurture and replenish your body. Enjoy meaningful fun and exchange. Care for and connect with our Big Body: the Earth.
We follow the organic flow of the group. Perhaps to the sea or to the dunes.
Harvest and prepare lunch together.
This day is for anyone who wishes to:
Ik heb het als een cadeau ervaren dat ik voor het eerst in mijn leven het niets liefdevol kon omarmen.
Yoga with LAHA in a breathtaking shala space surrounded by nature was my SUNDAY service.
My 1st ever cacao ceremony, I had no idea what to expect, all i know was that i arrived slightly nervous and yet full of curiosity and eager anticipation of the unknown.
Mahalo e nā akua for bringing her to us here, on our little dot in the ocean. And for bringing me across her path.
Laha’s class provides an opportunity to experience yourself with deep introspective prompts, in a safe and nurturing environment.
Diep ontspannen, zacht geraakt en liefdevol verbonden
